Are you looking for reducing your energy bills for the year? Solar Panels can help you in that. Solar power allows residents in reducing the energy bills and also adds value to the overall home prices. Nowadays, Australian residents are quite often seen adopting renewable energy in their lives. There are three main types of solar panels – monocrystalline, polycrystalline and thin film.
Going solar indeed requires a financial investment, but it is worth it in the long run. There are more than two million solar panel systems installed across Australia.
Types of Solar Panels: Which One Is the Best Choice?
There are three major types of Solar Panels used in Australia:
These solar cells are also known as single-crystalline cells. They are made up of deep black colour crystalline structures. These cells appear black because of the light that interacts with the pure silicon crystal. Monocrystalline solar panels can convert around 15% – 21% of the solar energy into useable electricity. They have a variety of colours for their back sheets and frames. The back sheets are mostly black, silver, or white, whereas the metal frames are only black or silver.
These solar cells are also known as multi-crystalline cells. They are less efficient but more affordable. During intense hot summers, polycrystalline cells tend to have lower heat tolerance, so they don’t work efficiently. Just like monocrystalline cells, polycrystalline cells have a variety of colours for their back sheets and frames. The light reflects off the silicon fragments differently from how it reflects in a monocrystalline silicon wafer due to the bluish hue. The frames of panels are silver mainly, and the back sheets are either silver or white.
3. Thin Film
These are produced in bulk at very cheap rates. However, they are the least ideal for residential premises. Such less efficient panels are widely used for commercial and agricultural properties where there can be more space. The cells within these panels are 350 times thinner than the crystalline wafers. These panels can be either blue or black in colour.
The most recommended solar panels for home use are the monocrystalline panels which have more efficiency than others. However, polycrystalline panels have evolved in recent years so any individual would use them too.
Energy efficiency is an essential factor to be considered while installing solar panels. Suppose your solar panel installer says that there is a negligible difference in panel efficiency between polycrystalline and monocrystalline – a polycrystalline solar panel can be the best for home use.
